Ember felt her heart swell with joy at the sight of the Broken Broom Pub. Still located on Cauchemar’s main street, the pub has been the site of many great conversations, and quite a few decent ones. A few bad memories, like finding the body of a circus performer in the dumpster out back, but still overall she could allow nostalgia to wash over her.

“Ash and I aren’t weird or anything in the future, are we?” Embar asked Kali as she parked her cruiser in a spot that read Reserved for Ember, in Perpetuity.

“No, not at all.”

“I haven’t really had much of a chance to talk to her since I woke up from my coma.”

“As far as I know, you guys are good. She’s just busy, managing the Broom franchises around the country.”

“My sister, a businesswoman. Not where I expected that to go.”

“Were you expecting to be a Captain?”

Ember froze a few steps from the door to the Broken Broom. “Not really. I only became a deputy so I could work the case when Agent Reddy insisted I was a civilian. I never really gave any thought to climbing the ranks, as it were.”

“Well, there’s a lot you’ve missed out on. Maybe you could trust those of us who love you a little bit more than you do.”

Ember scowled at Kali. “Are you making a statement about my ultimatum to Cedric?”

“Not at all, I meant in a general sense.”

They moved aside as a couple exited the restaurant.

I’m in the way here, it seems. In more ways than one.

Ember entered the pub, and a pretty young waitress came up to her.

“Hi, just one?”

“Um…Is Ash here?”

“Ash?” The waitress cocked her head to the side. “I don’t know of any—wait, do you mean Ms. McNair?”

“Yes, I do,” Ember said with a grin. “Can you tell ‘Ms. McNair’ that her sister is here?”

The waitress’ mouth dropped open, and only then did she notice the uniform. “You’re…you’re her.”

“In the flesh.”

“I’m so sorry—I’ll go tell her you’re here right away.”

“Relax, toots,” Kali said. “Geez, way to make it overdramatic.”

In short order, a red-haired woman with half her head shaved and a tattoo of a rose on her skull appeared in the kitchen window.

“Ember!” Ash rushed out of the kitchen and sized her sister in a hug. “I was hoping I’d get a chance to see you before I had to leave town again.”

“Ash…” Ember sighed, exulting in her sister’s familiar warmth and scent. “Sorry to just pop in unannounced.”

“Hey, are you hungry?”

Ember felt her stomach growl at the mention of food. “Ravenous.”

“Come on back to my office, and I’ll get the kitchen staff on lunch detail.”

Ember had to resist sitting in the ‘manager’ chair behind the desk. The instinct was still strong even though she hadn’t run the broom herself in a very long time.

“So, what do I owe the pleasure?” Ash settled in the chair beside Ember’s own, eschewing the manager’s spot as if to prove a point. “Do you think I might have some info on this Mr.
